Lightning Protection

Formerly Silver Streak Lightning Protection, Ferguson Incorporated has been installing U.L. certified protection systems throughout the Midwest since 1989. Our home base is located in Kansas City, but our services exceed no boundaries.
Ferguson Incorporated installs various lightning protection systems. Whether it will be Residential or Commercial, Concealed or Exposed, Repairs or Additions to old systems, we will meet your needs.

What causes lightning?
Most experts believe that updrafts in the sky separate charges so that positive charges end up at the top of the cloud while negative flow to the bottom. When the negative charge moves down toward the earth, this creates a path in the air. Lightning generally occurs when these charges are returning to the sky and join together. This discharge of energy uses the same path down, dissipating into the earth below.
How does lightning protection work?
A lightning protection system provides a means by which this current may enter or leave the earth without passing through and damaging non-conductors, such as wood, brick, tile or concrete. A lightning protection system does not create or attract a lightning strike; it simply and safely provides a low resistant path for the charges above to reach the earth below.
A few simple questions to ask before you purchase a lightning protection system:
  • Are the installed products marked to indicate they comply with UL requirements?
  • If so are the installers UL certified as well?
  • What guidelines does the installer follow?
  • Is it a nationally recognized installation standard for lightning protection systems?
  • How can I be sure the installation will pass inspection?
Lightning is responsible for:
  • More deaths and property loss than tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods combined
  • Several hundred million dollars in damages to property annually in the U.S.
Lightning can:
  • Travel over 35 miles away
  • Produce approximately 100,000 volts to jump one foot
  • Strike in the same spot multiple times

Residential Systems

Concealed
A concealed lightning protection system has to be installed while the home is under construction. The copper cables used within the system are connected to points, which extend a minimum of 10 in. beyond the rooftop, then run inside the attic space, down the bare-stud-walls, and exit outside the home just above the foundation line. The cables are connected to ground rounds, which are placed around the perimeter, with a minimum of two per structure, and are no further apart than 100 ft. It is imperative that we install the system before insulating, dry walling, or shingling has begun. If you wish to have your system concealed, please contact us during the framing stages of construction and we will custom design on site or within the blueprints of your home.
Exposed
On a pre-existing home, the exposed system and components comply with UL's (Underwriters Laboratories) internationally recognized standards for lightning protection. These components are fastened to the rooftop and follow the rain guttering to the ground and are connected to ground rods. On all systems we bond to water, electric, gas, and cable/ satellite/ antennas to create one common ground throughout the structure. We will also install a surge protector inside your electrical box, which absorbs up to 250,000 volts of electricity, and protects all the valuable electronics within your home. Protecting cherished belongings for approximately 1% or less than the price of your home!

Commercial System

We request a copy or set of blueprints to bid and design a U.L. certified system. A meeting with the general contractor, superintendent, or project manager should be scheduled prior to bidding as well as installation.
